Understanding Varicose Vein

A vein is said to be varicose when it is dilated, tortuous and lengthened. Varicose vein generally appears in the legs, although it can appear in any part of the body as well. Veins have leaflet valves to flow blood in right way. When veins get enlarged, leaflets no longer work properly, and ultimately valves fail to work. This causes the blood to pool down in the veins and get more enlarged.

Veins in the legs are either deep or superficial. The superficial veins are closer to the skin that typically becomes varicose. These veins are also considered as the perforate or communicator veins. The deep veins are connective tissues that are encased by muscles. These veins help to pump up the blood and are sent to the heart. They have one way valves that prevents them from development of viscosities.

Most of the people take varicose veins as mild, common and medically insignificant variations in the veins. For such people, this condition is merely a cosmetic concern. But for others it may be a cause of discomforts, aching, itching, paining or a severe condition like ulcers. Varicose veins also leads to other disorders in the circulatory system.

In the U.S., varicose veins are common with older women as women are more likely to have such disorder than men. Women suffer from varicose veins because of the menstruation process and pregnancy.

Varicose veins can also be attributed to long hours of standing and walking upright, which eventually increases the pressure in the veins in lower body.

There are experts who think that inherited problems cause people to have very less valves or in cases when valves dont function properly, varicose veins occur. The people who are born with abnormal vein walls results in weakness and at last become leaky, faces the disorder of varicose veins. The results of such cause may be worse when a person is a job that requires long hours standing which creates a burden on legs.

There are many cases which lead to varicose veins example, obesity or distended belly, chronic constipation, chronic cough, urinary retention due to enlarged prostate, prior trauma or surgery to the leg. Such conditions disturb the normal blood flow in the body. Age is also a reason for varicose vein in the body.

Varicose vein is meant to be treated especially in cases if a patient is going through discoloration, ulceration, inflammation or swelling of the legs. Severe pain or swelling in the legs suggests a blood clotting. To get relief from varicose vein on the skin of the body, one can opt for a surgical treatment or a laser therapy these days.
